Kate Bingaman-Burt and Mike Perry

This past fall I headed to New York City to see an artist talk with Kate Bingaman-Burt and Mike Perry at the Jen Bekman Gallery. I had arranged to spend some time with them and filmed our conversation.

Michael Perry runs a small design studio in Brooklyn, New York. Working with clients like MTV, Brooklyn Industries, Dwell Magazine, New York Times Magazine and so many more. Perry just finished his first book titled “Hand Job” published by Princeton Architectural Press. Doodling away night and day, Perry creates new typefaces and sundry graphics that inevitably evolve into his new work, exercising the great belief that the generating of piles is the sincerest form of creative process. He has shown his work around the world, from the booming metropolis of London to Minneapolis to the homegrown expanses of Kansas.

Kate Bingaman-Burt started Obsessive Consumption in 2002 when she decided to photograph all of her purchases and in turn create a brand out of the process to package and promote. Her work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Lowdown Magazine, Money, Print, HOW Design, Craft, Adorn, GOOD, and many others. Her work is featured in the upcoming books Handjob! A Catalog of Type by Mike Perry and Becoming a Digital Designer by Steven Heller and David Womack. She received her MFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2004 and is an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Mississippi State University.

It was great to finally get to meet them. Both Kate and Mike have contributed work to my book, Grab Bag Book (HOW Books). Thanks to both of them for the time they spent talking with me and their inspiration.

Conversations with Students

The most recent book that I have acquired is Paul Rand, Conversations with Students from Princeton Architectural Press. I first got my hands on the book in the Museum of Modern Art’s Book Store in New York City and then received it as a gift latter on. The book provides some amazing insight, thoughts and ideas on design through two conversations that Paul Rand had with his students. There are also six personal stories from his students that show the true character of one of the most well know graphic designers in history. You can read one of the stories from Jessica Helfand at an article on Design Observer.

The book is designed beautifully with large quotes and one color photographs. While the book is considered short and small at eighty pages it is well worth it for the brilliant insight to the life and thoughts of Paul Rand.

Typography Blocks

These typography blocks seem pretty amazing and can act as some nice decoration for your work or living space. You can even start teaching you children about typography at an early age. They are hand painted and produced by Post Typography.

That’s What She Twittered

This shirt is among some other great shirts that I found at Cottyn.
Brought to you by the same amazing people who brought us Virb and Purevolume.

The Store for Tomorrow

Wolff Olins has introduced a brilliant new project. It is a model for the brand of the future called Brand Next. They are introducing this concept through a show entitled The Store for Tomorrow.

Taking an aspect of the Brand Next thinking, The Store for Tomorrow explores the idea of brands as platforms for action, helping people do more and do better.

Held in London and New York, the show highlights ten platform brands that invite people to take part, to give as well as get. And the more people who join in, the better it becomes for everybody.

I think that this model as one that everybody should keep an eye on. In the near future, I hope that we see more brands embrace this way of thinking.

Design is Simply What Feels Right

For the first time, I recently took some time to think about what I was planning to do with my life. I asked myself whether I truly wanted to become a graphic designer, and the answer was yes.

To create is in my nature. My fear is having to settle for a design position in some huge advertising company doing work that isn’t worth my time. The secret, I assume, is to work hard and become amazing at graphic design so that I can be creative in other ways than what time, money or the client will allow. I won’t mind those things, for they are sure to make some good stories some day when I give a lecture to a room full of young designers in my old age.

No budgets, proposals, deadlines. Just me and a paintbrush, pen, camera, pencil, and some paper, all backed by a creative mind.

When visiting colleges I have been told that many people come in wanting to be something and change their mind and graduate doing something else. Right now, I would tell you that this will not happen with me. Graphic design is for me and I am sure of that.

Design is simply what feels right for me, and I am happy it’s that way.

An Afternoon with Paul Rand

As part of a scholarship for college I had write an essay on an artist that I would like to spend an afternoon with.

One of the most well known and respected graphic designers in history was Paul Rand. He was not only a graphic designer but was an educator as well who taught at Yale University. He is responsible for creating many wide spread corporate logos, including UPS, ABC, IBM, Next, Westinghouse and more.

I chose Paul Rand because of the several stories I have heard about him and for the inspiration and education he has provided to many great designers who came after him. He is one of the people I regret not having the opportunity to meet.

If I was to spend an afternoon with Paul Rand we would visit his house. We would sit there, drinking tea that he made for us. His house would be simple but the furniture would be arranged perfectly. The home would be aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Naturally we would have discussed graphic design and he might have gone on about form and typography. I would inquire about how he started his career and would be looking for stories about the amazing past that he had. He would stray away from the topic of graphic design quickly and there would be nothing I could do. He would talk about culture, ideas, and books. I would add my thoughts and we would debate about a couple things here and there. He would suggest books for me to read and new ideas to wrap my mind around.

From Paul Rand I would learn simple lessons that are important in life. I would not be educated in specific graphic design techniques or concepts, but rather I would learn about the larger picture of life. He would tell me how design impacts others, what not to miss as I went through life, and how to see the world.

A Gathering of Creatives

Behance is a business in New York City focused on helping creative proffesionals make their ideas happen. They produce a group of products that assist people in being productive and write an online magazine. Their most recent offering is the Behance Network, an online platform for creative portfolios, projects, and collaborations.

Over the past months I have been working as a remote intern and have been doing online marketing and advertising for the Behance Network through social networks and blogs. I have been responsible for developing strategies and executing them in order to spread the word about the website. The experience is one that has taught me so much about the industry and has allowed me to make connections with people.

I had first written about the Behance Network here on my blog and said that it still needed some work. Scott Belsky, the founder of the company, sent me an email asking what I thought neeed work on. I sent a lengthy reply and indicated that I was interested in an internship opporunity that he had posted online. After talking to him on the phone, and telling him that I was a highschool senior not a college senior, he was interested in having me work for Behance. He asked me what I wanted to work on and I shared the many ideas I had for his company and product. And from there we went on promoting the Behance Network.

Thin, Movies, Capsule, and Mobile

Here on the east coast we had to wait until noon for the keynote to start at Macworld. Finally, it was time and I had to go to class, but after class at lunch we broke the notebook out to see what was going on. At this point nothing that big was announced and towards the end of lunch it came. The Macbook Air had arrived. We now headed off to the last class of the day where one of my friends sat across from me and I would glance at him to see if anything else big was announced, he shook his head after checking his iPhone under the desk. Macworld had ended and we were left with four new products.

Macbook Air
This thing is amazing. It is the world’s thinnest notebook computer. In order to get it this small they have created some great new technology, both on the software and hardware front. The CPU could be a little faster, I don’t think 1.8 GHz will work for me and others who have to run Adobe Creative Suite and other design, video, and motion software. However, when looking at the notebook line it goes from 1.8 (Air) to 2.6 (Pro), which is not a huge difference. On an interesting note the Macbook Air website does not have an Intel Core Duo section like the Macbook and Macbook Pro has. Overall, I think that it could be faster, the price is to high, that it is a really smart move for Apple, and that it is just down right amazing.

iPod Touch
They came out with some new applications for the iPod Touch including Maps, Mail and more. This is a good move and the price is worth it, though it doesn’t cost Apple anything to provide these new applications to you. I think I would get one if it had a camera, but this would make it to similar to the iPhone. The iPhone also got a nice update, and if I wasn’t already signed onto a contract with Sprint I would have to save some money up and get one. Someday.

Time Capsule
Apple came out with a wireless backup hard drive and made it a wireless internet hub as well. I think that this is a great concept and if it works well, it will become a convenience for many people. I plan on using this in my dorm room for college, not to provide wireless internet, but so that I can backup wirelessly from anywhere.

iTunes Movie Rentals and Apple TV
Jobs started off by admitting that they had failed, along with others, on their first try. And this time it looks like the will succeed. They have partnered with all of the major studios, which is a key here. It is all done through the Apple TV, which has a new menu design. To be able to not leave your house and just pick a movie to rent will be an amazing experience. And then to be able to transfer it to multiple devices is a great feature. While I still support the small guy video rental store and have not bought a Blue-Ray HD DVD player yet, I think that this is a very strong product. And it will become even stronger when it can record my television shows. Also, with the new Apple TV, you can see the photos from Flickr. (Dave Winer recently released software that also puts Flickr photos on your television, would love to know what he thinks about this. And Steve wasn’t able to get Flickr to work in the demo, so we shall see.)

For the record, I still love my Macbook. It looks great and gets the job done. Even though the new Air is amazing, I don’t think it should deteriorate the value of my Macbook. Khoi Vinh actually wrote about this at length and made some great points about how we don’t design products to deteriorate. Instead we make them to look beautiful when they are sold instead for the future when they have wear and tear. He says that this is just wrong. The Macbook Air looks brilliant, and I’m sure it is, but my half year old Macbook works wonders and looks great.

Apple seems to be focusing more on the environmental impact their products have and this is a great start for them with the Macbook Air. Steve said talking about this would become a normal thing when new products are launched. As for new product launches I think that if they made the Macbook this thin we will see an updated iMac soon. And you can of course check out Apple’s website for all the information and photos.

Do you think 1.8 GHz is fast enough?
What are your thoughts in general on everything new?

Grab Bag Book and HOW Books

I am very pleased to announce that F+W Publication’s HOW Books will be publishing Grab Bag Book. They are responsible for bringing us HOW, Print, and I.D. Magazine along with the HOW Design Conference and a range of other wonderful books and magazines. I started this project last spring when I came up with the idea to have a collaborative visual book that challenged artists to explore their creativity.

Each of the participating artists from around the world is randomly assigned a “creative task” which is something they normally don’t do, anything from photography to illustration to design. This random task is drawn from the “Grab Bag” and the artist is also able to submit a piece of their work that comes from their normal field of work.

It is a book about trying something new. It is about exploring your creativity and learning to do new things. It is about opening up to a new idea and gaining respect for it. It’s a book of visual creations by people from around the world that have come together through the exploration of new things to create something beautiful.

The book will feature 100 artists, be around 200 pages long, and will come out in Spring 2009. Each artists will have two images in the book (one of the creative task and one from there current field of work), a biography, and a short paragraph detailing their experience with the creative task.

There are many well know and upcoming artists from around the world who are taking part in the book. And I would like to thank them all! Stay tuned for more news.
And of course I would like to send my thanks and appreciation to HOW Books!

If you are interested in being part of the book please get in touch with me.

Kate and Mike

On Saturday, my mom and I headed down to New York City for the day. We first stopped at the Cooper Hewitt National Museum of Design. There we saw several exhibits, but our favorite by far was Ingo Maurer’s exhibit that includes mostly sculptural and installation pieces with light. We then went out for some lunch and headed downtown to the Jen Bekman Gallery. (Photo below of Kate and Mike signing books. The other two people are Natalie and Ben, two great people that I met!)

When we walked in we were imediately recognized by Kate Bingaman-Burt who has been great to me as we have been in contact online for some time now. It was great to finally meet her in person, seeing that she lives in Mississippi! I had arrived early to film some interview footage and we set to work on that. After that Mike Perry showed up and it was great to finally meet him as well! I have greatly enjoyed both of their work and they both are contributing artists to Grab Bag Book (the collaborative visual book that I am making). We talked for a little bit and then shot some footage with Mike. People started arriving around now and we got ready for a talk by Kate and Mike. (Photo below of Mike and Kate’s shoes during the talk)

After the talk we hung out for a bit and talked to Kate and Mike more about there work, college, and more. I got Hand Job, Mike’s book that recently came out and that Kate is in, signed by the both of them. At this point we hugged, shook hands, and said our goodbyes. Thanks to Mike and Kate for being so great to me!

Design Can Change

What if leaders of local and national communities, along with the global community, thought like designers; would some of our problems be solved? Many designers and creative individuals will respond “yes” to this questions, on the other hand some of the political and social leaders might not see the benefit or necessarily understand what it means to think like a designer. This needs to change.

This is an excerpt from an essay that I have written. The full version will be placed online later this year. Copyright 2007.

Creative Blogs

I subscribe to plenty design and creative blogs, some of the best I would say. And everyday, I truly enjoy going through all of them and finding some great work and articles. I have even been featured on some of them. The problem however is that all I do is look at the post and the work and then if it’s good enough I will save it for later. The internet allows us to do so much more than look at design and creative work, we might as well take advantage of it.

I would like to see a new type of design and creative blog. One that engages it’s audience more. For the most part, the audience of these blogs work in the creative field themselves, thus making them easily engage-able. So for starters, most of these blogs will have the title of the post, an image or two, and then a link back to the portfolio of the creative individual who made it.

Continue to do that, but now add some more value to it. In the post, put in some of your own commentary. Why do you like what you are posting and even why you do not like it. Feel free to critique it a little. Then ask your audience what they think. If you ask them specific questions then it can make it even easier for them because they will be responding to something. This is not a new concept, rather it just takes advantage of the comments by having the readers comment more and answer specific questions.

Some bloggers might not have the time to do this. Or might feel that their role in the community is to share. And I won’t stop reading those blogs. But I think that if some of the design and creative blogs out their implement this concept and method, they will be able to provide so much more to their readers.

(There have to be even more ways to engage your readers, what do you think some other methods might be?)

Design and Dogs

Whenever I think of Khoi Vinh and Aaron Draplin, I think of their dogs. Two designers who both care greatly about their canine companions, these dogs appear to be a big part of their lives. And so now, I would like to introduce you to Mister President (belonging to Khoi, top) and Gary (belonging to Aaron, bottom). These dogs add a certain personal touch when I view these designer’s work or read their blogs. Thanks to Mister President and Gary for being their for your human pals.

School Dance Poster

New Poster

Printed and hung this poster on Monday for a school dance that is coming up. I am very lucky to have a large format printer at school along with a great Mac lab (already have two new iMacs, new iLife and new keyboards), DSLR Cameras, and video cameras that I get to use. Been getting some great comments on it from friends and teachers. Will have a better picture soon. View more of my work here.

Videos for Creatives

Little less than a week ago I started a new website called Videos for Creatives. It is a blog that features daily videos from the online creative community. Everything from design and architecture to comedy and culture, can be found on this blog. The site has already been featured by The Serif, It’s Nice That, and Joshua Blankenship. Thanks to everyone for the support. If you can think of any creative videos, feel free to share them with me. Hope you enjoy the site.

Brand America

MECA and Margo Halverson

I have just visited Maine College of Art (MECA) in Portland, ME on Friday. We arrived about an hour early, checked into admissions and then headed out to explore the city. I liked what I saw, in that Portland wasn’t a rural setting with nothing happening and it wasn’t a huge city that is overwhelming like some can be. From what I saw and heard it has a strong community of artists, multiple times when walking on the streets I saw people carrying cameras, sketchbooks, and canvases. Even better is that there are many local galleries in the area along with an art museum. We, being my dad and I, headed to Baxter’s Basement, the place in which we were to meet Margo Halverson, a graphic design professor at the college. I had connected with Margo online and asked if we could meet when I come up for my college visit and tour.

Baxter Building at MECA

She arrived, we introduced ourselves and headed back for her personal studio and office space. This space can tell you a lot about who she is. Many posters on the wall and a large bookshelf with design, art, and senior thesis books. Before we get into what we talked about, a little information on Margo. She has a BFA and MFA from Arizona State University, she was a graphic designer at Alice Design Communications, and is the director of Design Inquiry.

From talking with Margo, it is easy to tell that the her and the rest of the faculty are dedicated. The faculty from other departments take part in critiques of your work so that you may have other perspectives other than those who teach you design. There is a two year foundation in which students explore the basics of art. In the first year you are able to start taking electives in your area of interest, which might or might no become your major. MECA is for sure a “process” school with an emphasis on the importance of content within design, along with form. A good amount of writing in relation to your work and the history of design also takes place in the flexible curriculum. As part of your senior thesis project, each student produces hand bound books that illustrate and describe the process in which they went through to complete their work. Margo showed us some of these book and they were beautiful and well designed. She was able to offer us great insight on the program, and for that I am grateful.

MECA Main Building

After speaking with her we headed out on a tour of the school. MECA doesn’t necessarily have a dedicated campus but from what I saw the city becomes the campus with short walks in-between the several main buildings. The main building used to be an old department store in town in which they have turned into studio space. And let me tell you, this building makes for some great space to create art. With high ceilings, big windows everywhere, an open floor plan, and five stories, this space is ideal and beautiful. Overall, I was impressed with the school and was glad to be able to get an in-depth view of the program I have interest in and a general tour of the whole school.

Thanks to Margo for talking to us and it is Margo’s birthday today, so Happy Birthday!
