B+W Photos of Tommorow

Today, I look at black and white photos and I think they are old. They are. But what I ponder is what are going to be the black and white photos of tommorow. What are my kids going to look at and think is old. Will it be online videos and digital photos? Will it be online flash based interaction involving multiple medias? Or will it be some sort of capturing life in a completly different form? We do not know yet.

I look forward to the day when I take a 10 terabyte hardrive out from underneath my bed and show my kids the digital memories stored within it.

Bob Lanier

Today I sat on the floor of my school’s gym and looked way up at a man named Bob Lanier. Bob Lanier is a NBA Hall of Fame legend, MVP in 1974, ranks among the top 20 in NBA records for rebounds and points, and received All-Star honors 8 times. (I was several feet away from him as he talked so my neck got a little tired) Mr. Lanier doesn’t play for the NBA anymore but he is still heavily involved. He is currently a special assistant to the commissioner of the NBA. He served as the president of the NBA Players Association from 1980-1984. He has won many awards for his philanthropic work including the Walter J. Kennedy Citizenship Award, the Oscar Robertson Leadership Award, and the Jackie Robinson Award for service to the youth. He now brings players to Africa and does philanthropic work with them. Thanks Big Bob for every thing that you have done.

Coudal.com for Education

Coudal Partners have done and have been doing a wonderful job with their website since I started reading it about a year ago. If you are interested in design and creative work then this site is an excellent learning resource for you. But what if you are interested in Physics, US History, Algebra, Writing, or Spanish. Wait a minute. Did I just name all of the classes I am taking in school. I did.

What if there was a site out their like Coudal.com that was for science. It would take a student and show them more then their text book. They would be able to see other websites and resources about physics. They would be able to see submit links from different experts in the field every month. They would be able to participate in contest that would challenge them to think and apply their skills. They would be able to be part of a community just about physics.

I feel that this is what we really need in today’s education system. Textbooks are great but real world examples, online communities, and collaboration is the way to go.

RIP AOL Keyword

Remember the day when you would see a commercial on television and it would say AOL Keyword: Shoes. Well that is long gone.

Today, I just saw a billboard that said “Google Us”. In addition, on the commercials for bands you see their myspace address. Im glad to see that people are embracing new websites in their marketing.

Some Books

I just ordered three new books from Amazon.

All Marketers Are Liars
I could not put this book down. This book is about telling authentic stories that fit in with our world view and which we tell other people about. Seth Godin did a wonderful job with this book and many others that he has written.

The Long Tail
It all started with an article in Wired Magazine which then turned into this book. The book is about having endless choices and “selling less of more”. The book says that the hit is dead because we now have so many more choices and that anyone can be a producer. This is a well done book by Chris Anderson.

Getting Things Done
I had read about this book on some blogs and decided I needed to get. The title tells you exactly what the book is about. Its about being more productive, with less stress. David Allen has been teaching Getting Things Done to corporate executives for years and now you can get all his techniques.

Ball in the House

Ball in the House is a pretty sweet band. Heres how they work. They have five guys that sing acapella. They have no instruments. They have no recorded background music. Everything you hear is completely live, which is pretty hard to believe at first. Three guys do all the singing. One guy is the bass. And the other guy does percussion. Now the percussion guy is absolutely amazing. It sounds so real. I can’t really explain it in words. Go check them out…Ball in the House

About

Hello, my name is Ethan Bodnar. Here you will find my thoughts, ideas, and stories on design, the internet, life and more.

I am graphic designer, blogger, author, and entrepreneur
I am a high school senior and plan on attending college for graphic design.

To design, draw, photograph, and ultimately, to create. To connect with people sitting next to me and across the globe. To be a creative thinker and solve problems and imagine change. This is what I live for and this is who I am.

I have collaborated with well-known artists, published authors and respected bloggers from around the world on projects that I have created myself. Furthermore, I have developed a network of web designers, bloggers, artists, entrepreneurs, authors, and more in order to connect with them and have conversations about creativity, trends, and ideas.

I have been invited to speak at conferences, take part in digital books, start businesses, take part in internships in California and New York City, and have attended conferences for design and online advertising.

I live in a suburban town with my parents, two brothers, and four cats. Thanks for coming and I hope you enjoy the blog.

Grab Bag Book
I am the author and curator of a collaborative visual book that is being published by F+W Publication’s HOW Books. It is a book about 100 artists who explore their creativity by trying new disciplines and mediums and will be available in Spring 2009. Learn more at www.grabbagbook.com

Backwards
This is a book about what is wrong in the world and how to fix our problems. It takes a look at my original ideas on how we can create new systems and re-work old systems to solve global issues. Learn more at www.backwards.ethanbodnar.com

Videos for Creative

Thank You
Who I am and what I have done would not have been possible without some great people. Thanks to my Mom and Dad, for they are the ones who raised me, provided me with so many things, and have taught me so much. Thanks to my teachers, they are the ones who have educated me in the many subjects that make up this world. Thanks to my readers, you are the ones that I have created this place for. Thanks to all of the people that I have met and connected with online, I am ever so grateful for what you have shown me and inspired me to do. And thanks to the people that I will meet someday, the stories, ideas, and thoughts that we share will be the best gift anyone could give me. And for that future when our paths cross, I am grateful. Thank you.

The Story
A year and a half ago I discovered blogs and the new internet. Since that day, I have read many blogs and have explored the new internet made up of web application, communities, and people. For a year after that I had dreamed of starting a blog that I could call my own. This place would be where I could share my stories, thoughts, and ideas with people. And, here it is. Thanks for coming.

The Future
I look forward to pursuing an education in graphic design and using my creative thinking to have a positive impact on the world through design in both conventional and new ways of expression. I wish to imagine, learn, and explore the world in which we live and the many aspects and people within it.

Rethink: Yearbook

Yearbook are awesome. At the end of every year you get one. It is filled with lots of photos and is a great memory of that year of school. However, the yearbook could be so much more in todays world of online interactivity, dvds, and remix culture. Here’s what I’m thinking.

New sections including Opinion, Year in Entertainment, Special Senior Section
By the numbers (how many test were taking, how much food was served, how many sports games were played)
An art/creative section including paintings, sculptures, drawings, ect.
An interactive dvd with videos, podcasts, photos, and a pdf of the entire yearbook
Some goodies including stickers, fold out posters, buttons/pins
Softcover, Color, Big Photos, Simple Design, 200 pages, Jewelboxs or flat cardboard case at the back of the book and Lulu, 30 dollars
Fold out poster through iPhoto feature. Get a grant. Use fundable for parents to fund.
Upload to Dreamhost server. Burn CD. Facebook photos and group.
Online Flash edition of the yearbook with bonus features
Contribute photos and videos, take surveys, and submit other information online.
Each cover is a picture chosen by the person through a website
Let the students remix and customize their own yearbook.

Perhaps someday soon we will see some of this ideas implemented in a yearbook.

Harvest Festival

This year my family went away for Columbus Day Weekend. We headed off to the Berkshires in Massachusetts. On the way up we stopped a this huge Harvest Festival. And here are some observations.

-There was this guy playing a steel drum who I talked to. He said he had been playing since he was a kid and he let me play it. When I asked him where he got and how it was made he said that he got it from a guy in the Caribbean but that I could find out how they were made on the internet.
-There were all different kinds of people. It was like being in New York City.
-We stopped an bought some chocolate chip bread and some cinnamon bread. Not that excited? Well this bread was extraordinary. I guess you had to taste some to get it.
-Route7Grill caught my eye because of their marketing material. They had some nicely designed shirts, handouts, and menus. Although, I didn’t eat there.

Just some observations for you.

Apple Pro Site

Apple’s Pro site is a really nice resource and way to see what the professionals are doing with Apple’s products. They show examples and stories from design, film and video, photography, and music and audio. Each profile includes pictures, a list of hardware and software the uses, techniques, and sometimes videos. You should definitely go check out the site…Apple Pro Site

Independant Study Project

I have started an Independent Study Project at my school. This is basically I class that I have created and is look over by a faculty member. For my project I will be creating a online video website for my school. The site will have videos, podcasts, and written news that will be generated by myself, digital video classes, and by a club that I am creating. I started using Wordpress and Youtube embedded videos and after a while decided to just use Apple’s iWeb. I already here the shrikes of horror. I know iWeb generates some of the worst code ever and doesn’t use web standards. But, it it easy to use for me and for the other people and it works well with the server that I already have. Hopefully sometime in the future, I will move to Wordpress or even Movabletype.

My GTD Setup

Getting Things Done is about being more productive. The system works like this.
1. You take stuff and put it in the inbox.
2. Empty the inbox and decide if you can take action on it.
3. If no, you trash it, file it for reference, or add it to a someday/maybe list.
4. If yes, decide what the next action is.
5. If it is a project, add it to the projects list and your project plans.
6. If it will take less then two minutes, do it.
7. If it will take more then two minutes, delegate it or defer it.
8. When you defer it, you add it to your calendar or next actions list.
For more information see Merlin Mann’s post on the system.

There are many ways that you can implement this system. Here is how I did it.

1. I have an physical inbox at my house, I use index cards to add ideas to my inbox.
2. I use Backpack for my someday/maybe list and next actions list.
3. I use Mori for project planning and project lists.
4. I use file folders for my reference system.
5. I use a HIpsterPDA at school for homework.

Thats about it. I encourage all of you to go buy this book and start doing what it says.

IKEA Catalog

Yesterday, after coming home from summer camp for a week I approached the front porch to find the Sunday paper. The paper was in a yellow plastic bag that contained the new IKEA Catalog for 2007. The outside of the bag read.

“Your New 2007 Ikea Catalog is Inside. You should be very excited. Why, you ask? Because of all the new products and lower prices inside. And because this catalog is the only catalog we’ll send you all year. Why, you ask again? Well, we don’t believe in being wasteful. Junk mail in particular makes us upset. Steam-shooting-out-of-our-ears upset. Other companies send you different catalogs every week. Actually, they’re the same catalog, but with different covers to make you think “Golly gee-whiz! Something new and fun and exciting!” We make one catalog a year, not twenty. This helps us save on paper. Savings we then pass on to you . . . . . So celebrate. You’re holding the solutions guide for a better everyday life. Keep it handy for great ideas and inspiration to improve your home throughout the year. Today is a very exciting day.”

When I read that I was like “Wow”. The fact that they are saving paper and how the whole thing was worded. It just wanted to make me look through the catalog and head out to the store. Congrats IKEA on a job well done.

Rise and Shine

One day this summer I woke up around 4:30. I did this on purpose, sorta of as an experiment. I wanted to see what it would be like to be up this early. I went outside in my back yard and read a book. The morning is wonderful. It is quite and no one disturbs you. I was able to just think and observe.

But the problem is, that it is no longer summer. I need to go to school, and chances are that you have to go to work. So I figured that maybe I could go to bead an hour earlier and wake up an hour earlier. What would I do with my extra hour? Anything. That is the best thing about. I could do anything I wanted. Maybe you should try it out as well.

Blockbuster vs. Local Video Store

We have been going to the same video store forever. We love it. The prices are good. The people are nice. And they normally have what we want. About two years ago Blockbuster moved into a new retail development with a parking lot to small for their business. Now I don’t like Blockbuster for several reasons.

First, their prices are higher then our video store. Second, they don’t seem to have what we want. Third, you can’t reserve a movie like at the other store. And lastly it always crowded and you can’t ask the owner if they saw a movie you are thinking about getting. My dad and I can never figure out why everybody goes there. Too bad for them.

Learning to Drive

Being that I turned 16 a while ago, I have been learning to drive. Ok, so it is pretty exciting. However, it is a very complicated and frustrating thing to go through. Here is how it all goes. First, you got to get your permit by taking a 10 question written test. Then you have to wait like four months. During those four months you go to driving school. After those four months you take your test and get your license.

Well, it turns out that the driving school I went to, can’t even start my lessons on the actual road until November. Why is this? I do not know. I started taking the classes (where you sit in a classroom with a teacher) in the spring and now I have to wait until November. This basically means I will be getting my license in the middle of the New England winter.

But anyways, It’s all good in the long run. I have been driving around with my mom and dad, and that is going well. My mom was telling me how easy it was when she was a kid. If anyone has any stories about learning how to drive and getting their license, leave a comment and share them with us.
